The Story
The Story is the Star Wars storyline, the movies primarily, the source material for which the romance and fans base their inspiration. For the exhibit I focused primarily on the Last Jedi film since it was a favorite among Reylos for its plot, and character development.

An imposing silhouette that reminds the audience of Darth Vader, Kylo Ren’s Grandfather and his inspiration. This costume has been examined and discussed in the Reylo fandom and came up with several meanings and symbolism studied. One such meaning is that the cape is heavy looking and unwieldy, the weight of the darkness keeping Kylo down. The cape is gone in the scenes with Rey. There is even a scene where is not wearing a shirt. He doesn’t have that weight on him when he’s with Rey. There is gold thread woven through his top in a square patchwork pattern. This evokes his royal status of having a Princess as Mother and a Queen as a Grandmother.

"The Last Jedi" concept art from ©Disney/Lucasfilm
The Prime Jedi references a singular Jedi however the image invokes two beings joined together. One being from the darkness but made of light and the other being from the lightness but made of darkness. Ben Solo was born with Han Solo and Princess Leia as his parents, heroes of the galaxy. His Uncle is a Jedi Master and taught him the ways of the Force. However, there was a darkness in Ben, one he embraced later in life. No matter how much Ben flees to the Dark Side he will always have a spark of light inside him. Rey comes from a dark past, abandoned by her parents on a desert planet and forced to work her whole life for scraps of food, Rey could easily relent to the darkness. But she holds onto her lightness to guide her to leave the planet and find her purpose, though the darkness is always there in the shadows. Together the two beings are combined into The Prime Jedi.

While the "Force Awakens" was being developed Rey’s name was Kira before it was leaked to the public and they changed it. Here we see the dynamic between Kylo Ren and Kira, soon to be Rey. It looks similar to The Prime Jedi concept art that was created for "The Last Jedi". This concept art hints at how the two characters will be joined in their battle of good and evil but also joined through the Force. This artwork was a favorite of Reylo fans to point as evidence for the relationship to be plausible since the start of the project. No matter what the characters were destined to be connected.

Reflection
Through the Story we can experience the inspiration for the Reylo fandom. Scenes from the Last Jedi are still discussed by fans, the symbolism, the connection, and the Reylo relationship. None of this would be possible without the original source. It’s a dialogue between the storytellers and creators and the fans.
