Ali Hazelwood has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, and recently became a professor. She researched brain simulation and cognitive neuroscience in her gradate studies while writing a romance novel on the side. Her novels follow female characters who work in STEM: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Her series of books are called the “STEMinist Novels.” The Love Hypothesis was written in 2018 as Reylo fanfiction on Archive of Our Own (AO3), a fanfiction site. Her book became the first Reylo fanfiction to be professionally published, becoming a New York Times best-selling novel. This encouraged a new trend of Reylo fanfiction authors to publish their works. The two characters, Olive and Adam on the cover are based off Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver who play the characters Rey and Kylo Ren in the Star Wars franchise. The cover art was done by Reylo artist Lilith, who continues to work with Hazelwood on her other books. Hazelwood and another Reylo author, Thea Guanzon, were both featured in an anthology book called From a "Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi" (2023), published by Lucasfilm and Disney. Both authors are vocal Reylo fanfiction writers who don’t shy away from talking about their source material inspiration. Disney, a huge and scary corporation, doesn’t seem to mind and have welcomed them into the fold with open arms.

Fan videos pull clips from the movies to highlight a relationship. A song is picked to play over that the artist believes to represent their interpretation of the ship. Most fan videos have filters over the clips edited together to dissuade YouTube from taking the video down from the platform because of copyright claims. However, they are left alone by YouTube and film studios because the videos are not monetized but are just for fun.
Alexa Lexie combines clips from "The Force Awakens" and "The Last Jedi" with the song "You" by Us Baby Bear Bones plays in the background. The video is based around the quote Kylo Ren asks Rey in "The Last Jedi" 'why is the Force connecting us, you and I?' Highlighting the word ‘you’ used by the characters in reference to each other. The video also focuses on the similarity the characters share in actions used throughout the movies, a very important aspect of the Reylo fan’s interpretation of the couple.

#KyloRen/Rey #Angst and Feelings #Force Bond #Slow Burn
“Rey’s interrogation at the hands of Kylo Ren triggered an awakening in the Force, as well as an unwelcome bond that links them across the galaxy and grows stronger every day.”
A new and prominent aspect introduced in Reylo fanfiction in 2016, was the Force Bond. It was believed by the fans that Rey and Kylo Ren established some form of spiritual or metaphysical connection in "The Force Awakens" (2015). In "The Last Jedi" (2017) this theory was proven to be correct to the fandom's great pleasure.

Reflection
For studios “fan boys” are their core demographic, they are who they cater multi-hunger million dollar movies on their approval. Put to the side are fans who actually engage and explore the story. They are the ones with real power because they can break down the media presented to them and in turn create excitement in others for those stories. Positivity is stronger than negatively and hopefully these changes the Reylos have begun will ripple out and affect the pop culture space as a whole.
